Is 50 Too Young to Get My Hearing Checked?

It’s true that your risk of experiencing hearing loss increases as you get older. In fact, approximately 1 in 3 people over the age of 50 suffer from hearing loss and that number rises to 1 in 2 after the age of 60. But if you’re reading this thinking, ‘I’m too young to worry about hearing loss,’ think again.
We recommend getting a hearing test to anyone who is experiencing signs of hearing loss or changes to their hearing such as tinnitus symptoms. The reality is that there’s no such thing as being too young for a hearing test, so we’ve outlined some symptoms to look out for below.

The Symptoms of Hearing Loss

Generally, hearing loss doesn’t happen overnight, and because of the gradual changes in your hearing it can be difficult to recognise that you’re suffering from hearing loss. Usually, the first people to notice a change is your partner, family or close friends. To help you assess your own hearing, we’ve listed some symptoms below:

  • Difficulty hearing other people clearly.
  • Having to turn up the volume on your TV and other devices more than usual.
  • Asking people to repeat themselves.
  • Finding it particularly difficult to understand conversation in noisy places.

If these symptoms are sounding familiar to you, the best way forward is to book a FREE Hearing Experience at one our clinics. One of our clinicians will assess various aspects of your hearing and how to move forward based on your results.

When your hearing is impaired, your ability to communicate becomes impaired as well. This can lead to frustration at work and school, even at home with family and friends. It can also lead to you becoming socially withdrawn as you struggle to follow conversations with your loved ones, resulting in low self-esteem and feelings of anxiousness and depression.

The sooner we can treat hearing loss, the better. Hearing loss becomes harder to treat the longer it’s left. Hearing aids keep both your ears and brain active which can prevent your hearing from getting worse so it’s important to take action as soon as possible!
