Ive had my hearing aids for six months now so here’s a summary of my experience so far. I realised that I had a hearing problem when I kept increasing the volume on the tv, much to my wife’s annoyance. Not only that, I kept asking people to repeat what they just said as I was missing the first few words people were saying to me. People’s voices seemed to be muffled and I was having difficulty in following conversations in a crowd.
After a fair bit of research looking into different hearing clinics, I made an appointment with Kelly from Hearing Sense. Hearing Sense are an independent business and have access to all brands of hearing aids so they can find the exact hearing aid to suit the individual. Some hearing clinics are owned by a company that produces hearing aids and only sell their own brand, therefore may not have the exact hearing aid required for the individual hearing problem.
Kelly took me through the hearing test then explained the results detailing the problems found with my hearing. I had no idea of the connection between hearing and the brain and how the brain is affected when a persons hearing is deteriorating. In hindsight I should have purchased hearing aids after my first hearing test three years ago. Unfortunately I did not go to Hearing Sense as I was living elsewhere and the hearing clinician did not explain my hearing loss like Kelly did. I also did not want to admit that I had a hearing loss and was apprehensive about trialling a hearing aid for the first time.
When my new hearing aids were fitted, Kelly explained all the functions and instructions for use, cleaning, changing filters etc. I had follow-up appointments every two weeks or so until I was completely satisfied with all aspects of the hearing aids before making payment.
I am now very comfortable with the hearing aids. They are very inconspicuous and most people don’t realise I am wearing them. I use them all day every day and I can now hear very clearly, even in crowds as the hearing aids have adjustments for different situations.
My advice to anyone who don’t want to admit they have a hearing loss is to have a hearing test as soon as possible and follow up with hearing aids if recommended. There’s no better place to start than one of the clinics of Hearing Sense. I found the staff to be very caring and genuinely interested in my hearing problem. Whether I make a phone inquiry or just call into the clinic, the staff are always happy to assist.
